Favorite Things for a Puppy

  • How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond by Cesar Millan and Melissa Jo Peltier (It is very important to understand how a dog thinks. The first years of their life they only worry about where they fit in their pack. To have a calm dog, they need know exactly where they fit and their boundaries.)
  • Do NOT overwhelm them with too many “No’s” when they first come to your home, but work on a new one everyday.
  • Puppy Traps: We have been known to set a trap (Legos, stuffed animals, leather work gloves, leather purses, underwear, leather shoes) for them in the middle of the room, pretend not to watch them and catch them when they start paying attention to your trap. Only work on one type of object at a time. You can use the phrase, “That’s not yours!” and then replace it with a fun toy and say, “This is yours!”

  • KirklandPuppy food  (Or mix 1/2 of new food with 1/2 Kirkland food for about a week if you want to get them used to a new puppy food. We will send you home with some at your request.)
  • Undercoat brush (*Not the kind that pulls out fur, the correct one looks like an old-fashioned garden rake)
  • Regular slicker brush
  • Dr. Kruger’s Puppy vitamins or Nuvet Labs Vitamins (Order Code: 71200)
  • Nylabones Dog Chews for medium dogs (they last a long time) *They eat through the puppy ones really quickly!
  • Organic beef liver treats (Green Beans/Carrots, Fresh, once they get a little older) – for training!
  • Antlers, or Marrow/Knuckle Bones from the Butcher (This is a rare treat, be careful giving them to a puppy too often – always supervise them with the bones)
  • List of 100 dog tricks (learning new tricks and being praised = happy puppies)  There are many sites with ideas including this one:  http://miraclepaws.weebly.com/dog-tricks.html
  • Kennel:  Size: 30-50 lbs  (My favorite is the Petmate Sky Kennel on Amazon that is 28″ long) OR
  • Kennel: Size 36″ long with a side entrance – add a potty training system (21″ long) and a blanket or a small (21″ long) doggie bed. (This one has artificial grass for those who have it in their yards). This is great to leave open in your home, so they have a potty spot if you get distracted.
  • Small Collar with ID tag
  • Leash:  expect it to trail behind the puppy for a while.  (When they have completed their third puppy shot they will be about ready to leash train.)
  • Umbilical Training – I highly recommend this on the days you’re feeling up to it!
  • KONG Air Dog Squeakair Dog Toy Tennis Balls, Small, 3-Pack (This is perfect to teach fetch!)
  • NO – Raw hide (This can choke a puppy)
